As the Romans

"When in Rome, do as the Romans". This is an often quoted epitaph that is used to justify the use of "foreign" or "pagan" ways of doing things.

Sometimes this is a pure case of compromise. It is easier to co-exist in a society when we assume more of the characteristics and methodologies of its members. This can often involve letting previously key elements of faith expression slip into irrelevance, or modify them to be less "objectionable".

Sometimes, it is a case of adopting some sound communication strategies. It is clearly more effective to utilize concepts and stories understandable and identifiable by the audience. It often comes down to decisions about what elements are really crucial and what elements are "negotiable" and can be made secondary to the task of communication.
