Heretics in Print

One of the earliest uses of the press by the Catholic Church was to publish the INDEX to list writings that were considered heretical. It seems a lot like the political process today, using the major media for mudslinging rather than to communicate one's own position.

The Catholic Church in Luther's day had reason to be wary of the printing press. It opened the way for more widespread dissemination of information to "supplement" what they received from their priests. Some of this "supplemental" information may have been to challenge what they had been taught, or to repudiate some policies of some Catholic parishes. It must have been a day filled with lots of warnings about the printing press. Much like today's warnings from the old guard concerning today's new media.
