Out of the Box : Reading at the beginning

John Hagel III's book, Out Of the Box (subsequently ref. to as OOTB)  has a Web site,  linked to a Weblog at JohnHagel.com.  It is less a technical book about Web services and more of an attempt to interpret for Business execs what Web Services could mean for business.  Hagel wrote Net Gain about 6 years ago,  attempting to interpret what Online Community could mean.  Most businesses didn't get it.  More seem to getting the Web Services promise,  but have yet to make the moves neccessary to actually apply resources to learning XML and the swirl of development happening in SOAP, RSS,  and related technologies.

Web Services represents the first new technology that addresses the problem of integrating existing business applications,  especially Web-based applications, Hagel affirms.  "The architecture is designed to ensure that applications and data can be accessed by authorized entities, regardless of location or underlying technology platforms" (p. 24)

New Webhost Possibilities

If things go well with this new webhost that I will be "tinkering with" very soon,  then theoblogical.org will be moving over there.  The Church site might also go if the Community Starter Kit seems to be a good framework to use to redesign our Church site.

The following features from the asp.net Starter Kit descriptions for "Community Starter Kit" seem to suggest to me that this might be the ticket for what I envision for Church web site development (with a few tweaks of course):

Includes Six Standard Content Modules

  • Articles
    • Self explanatory; basic content
  • Links
    • Enable Church members to contribute and editorialize on links of interest around certain issues
  • Downloads
    • Enable sharing of pdfs, Church publications,  etc.
  • Photo Gallery
    • Enable collaboration on sharing photos taken of Church events,  show off family photos in personal membership area
  • Events
    • Publicize and administer calendar for Church schedule
  • Books
    • Provide area for reccommended books (from staff,  classes, members with posting priveleges)

Create Multiple Communities with a Single Installation

  • Set community quotas
    • Set up content quotas for Staff, Contributors, Editors, and members

Additional Features

  • Send Newsletters
    • To notify the non-Web-savvy or those without affordable access, via email
  • Create voting polls
    • Get a sense of the group around issues, vote on Web content ideas
  • Supports RSS news feeds and XML Web services
    • Enable customized information to be presented to users who choose to be alerted when appropriate/relevant content and events are added

New Webhost upcoming

I just signed up for a webhost that has .NET support and SQLServer 2000 support at just 9.95 a month.  I did it mainly to be able to try some "educational tinkering" in order to learn more .Net,  use the Community Starter Kit Beta I downloaded from asp.net (find it under "Starter Kits" at asp.net)

The service is called WebHost4Life,  and so my opinions will no doubt show up here,  good and bad.  MY first order of business is to get the Kit copied up, along with the Data (which presently is in my MSDE instance on my box which is running XP Pro). I also have Visual Studio.Net, and hope I will be learning some "Database Project" ways of administering SQLServer2000 Data.
