It's been quite a week. Tuesday, my sister's ex-husband's 18-year old daughter died when her asthma apparatus failed. Her father, trying desperately to do something, basically witnessed her death, as she slipped into a coma. When I visited the hospital that evening, they had just prounounced here dead. She had been on a resperator, but had no brain activity.
Brittany had just graduated from high school two weeks before. She was a part of our family for several years after my sister Jill married John, Brittany's dad in December 1993. My mom and sister supplied many pictures of Brittany's activities for her years between 8 and 16. John and Jill had been divorced about a year ago. Brittany was there at the airport when our adopted daughter Kelli came to us from Korea in 1999. She's in pictures of Kelli's 3rd birthday. She's in many other family memories (birthdays, Christmases, Thanksgiving, vacations) Her birthday was the same as my wife Janet (June 3) . This morning my thoughts turn to John as he wakes up to face the day on the day after his daughter was buried. My sister Jill, Brittany's step mother for 8 or 9 years, is also struck. Brittanys' friends came and hugged her, as Jill was the parent who was usually there when they were over at Brittany's house.
